Mooncakes and art make a lovely match for the Mid-Autumn Festival at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur. Aesthetic imagery in bright vivid splashes that expresses the auspiciousness of the festival are on the mooncake box, designed by CN Liew, an acclaimed contemporary ink artist.
Eight handcrafted mooncakes are in this two-tier, limited edition gift box. They are smaller than the usual mooncakes, but I like the size. It’s easier to share and faster to finish, which means you can savour more flavours at one sitting, whether at the end of a meal or at tea-time.
I’m drawn to the Classic Baked Mooncakes – Lotus Seed Paste with Single Egg Yolk, Pandan Paste with Single Egg Yolk, Pu Er Tangerine with Lotus and Red Bean Paste with Almond Flakes. All the mooncakes are lightly sweet, and I’m especially partial to the Pu Er Tangerine with Lotus. I love the scent of the peel diffusing into the mooncake, and its bite. My vote also goes to the Lotus Seed with Single Egg Yolk and the Red Bean Paste one.
The Snow Skin varieties are similarly pleasing and delectable. The Musang King Durian mooncake was hugely popular at our tasting at Yun House after a scrumptious lunch. I loved the Homemade Bird’s Nest with Black Sesame and Almond, and the White Lotus Paste with Seaweed Black Sugar and Macadamia Nuts. There’s also a Chocolate Lotus Paste with Himalayan Salt and Egg Yolk Custard.
The bespoke design on the mooncake box comes from artist Liew’s Beyond the Border Series which was showcased at ART SG 2023 in Singapore. Liew is also the first Malaysian artist whose works have been exhibited at Art Basel, Fine Art Asia and Art Miami.
The Mid-Autumn Festival, which will be on September 29, revolves around the full moon which is a symbol of unity and completeness. It’s a time for family reunions and celebrations.
“The custom of gifting and sharing mooncakes signifies harmony, happiness and good fortune,” says Jimmy Wong, Executive Chef of Yun House. “Our limited-edition mooncake boxes are the perfect way to share the festive spirit with family, close friends and valued business partners.”
The mooncakes at Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur are priced from RM42 to RM78 (per piece) and from RM336 to RM624 (per gift box containing 8 pieces).
