Temple Street is one of the latest cha chan teng (HK café) you could visit in KL. It’s a cavernous one in Mid Valley Megamall, with a large menu to match. A sip of my HK milk tea and I felt positive about the food in the cafe. The tea was fragrant, thick enough and good. We shouldn’t but we did order a buttery toast to go with it.
Lunch started in earnest with HK Style Fried Beef Hor Fun, Rice with Mui Choy Pork, Three Combo Rice, Noodles in Clear Soup with Beef Brisket and Temple Street Sampan Congee.
There was another version of the Fried Beef Hor Fun too, with chee chup or pig innards – intestines, liver and pork. There was wok heat in the fried beef hor fun which was generous with the meat. But the Hor Fun with Chee Chup turned out to be more flavourful.
Noodles in Clear Soup with Beef Brisket — so good
I liked very much the Noodles in Clear Soup with Beef Brisket, and as expected there was radish in the tasty, beefy soup which also had beef tendon in it. The hor fun was smooth and the chilli sauce was so good.
The home-style Rice with Mui Choy Pork, had steamed minced pork with the sweetish mui choy covering the rice in the bowl, with its sauce drizzling down, It was delicious.
The 3 combo rice is about poached chicken, roast pork and char siu completely covering rice in the bowl. The meats were done well. The chicken was smooth, the roast pork had a crispy skin and the char siu or Barbecued pork was sweet and nice.
The sauce from the char siu and that on the chicken flavoured the rice which was fragrant with sesame oil. It was served with a zesty ginger sauce too. There seemed to be more meat than rice, which works well for those who are on a high-protein diet.
Porridge is never a preferred choice with me, but the Temple Street Sampan Congee sat well with me. There were pork strips and fish in the porridge, which was topped with fried peanuts and crispy yu tiao. I liked it so much I even took home the leftovers.
We had a dish of Braised Chicken Feet which we sent back for a longer braising and they came back more tender, soaking in the flavours of the sauce.
Besides the HK style toast which we had with our milk tea, we had some rich and creamy Portuguese egg tarts to end our lunch.
Among the prices: the toast is RM8, Egg Tarts RM5,50 each, Beef Noodles RM25, Chicken Feet RM12, Sampan Congee RM17, 3 Combo Rice RM28, Preserved Vegetable Rice RM16, Fried Hor Fun with Beef RM18.
Temple Street has an experienced Chef Mun from Hong Kong at the helm. It’s located at LG-058A Mid Valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur.
