I have had mooncakes with four salted egg yolks during the Mid-Autumn Festival many years ago. I have not seen these in a long time. Now the newly opened Four Seasons Hotel Kuala Lumpur has debuted a Lotus Seed Paste with Eight Egg Yolks Mooncake for this festival which dawns on 24 September .
It’s the ultimate Mid-Autumn Festival gift. It’s an impressive mooncake when cut, each piece showing off at least two halves of an egg. The lotus seed paste is smooth and moist, the yolks are gloriously reddish orange. This mooncake has a 6.5 inch diameter and was specially made by Chef Jimmy Wong, Executive Chinese Chef of Yun House and his team.
There are seven other flavours to choose from for the normal-sized mooncakes: Classic flavours like Lotus Seed Paste with Double Egg Yolk and White Lotus Seed Paste. Assorted Nuts and Sun-dried fruits are a traditional favourite, and this is one is packed with nuts and fruits without turning out too sweet.
There are innovative flavours like the fragrant and lovely Pu-Erh Tea and Tangerine Lotus Seed Paste. I love the burst of citrusy aroma from the aged tangerine peel in it. The Black Sesame and Lotus Seed Paste is a new flavour here. For a touch of local there is the Pandan Flavour Lotus Seed Paste with Single Egg Yolk.
The eight-yolk mooncake is RM208 nett each. You can select any four flavours to fill a box at RM168 nett or RM42 nett per mooncake. For enquiries or orders, call +603 2382 8640 or email yunhouse.kualalumpur@fourseasons.com. The hotel also offers a delivery service.
We savoured these mooncakes at the elegant Lounge, together with an Afternoon Tea Selection. Of course we had to have The Lounge Tropical Signature Blend for our tea, with aromas of guava, strawberry, coconut, hisbiscus, marigold and corn flowers Scones with thick clotted cream and strawberry preserves stood out, as did lemon meringue tarts, chocolate desserts and macarons and savoury items on the tiered tray.
