Malaysia’s leading annual film festival on human rights, the FreedomFilmFest, returns to PJ Live Arts with a lineup of 30 cutting edge films that offer heart-stopping and rare views into the most gripping global issues of today. Once again, the homegrown film festival on documentaries from around the world will keep you on the edge of your seat with the best of brave new flicks by talented local and international filmmakers.
This weeklong film festival (20th to 27th August 2016) cannot come at a better time, as global citizens are still coming to terms with the onslaught of news that are shaking local and international waves. Festival goers can expect to watch edgy, contemporary, honest-to-life true stories unfold moment by moment, in vivid cinematography and haunting soundtracks.
Documentaries include fresh views into war in Syria, Germany’s open-arms refugee policy, Indonesia’s six-religion administration, Sarawak’s forest destruction and corruption, worldwide food security, the cost of fashion and women sustaining their role in the religious clergy in the United States, among rare views into Vietnam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Kenya and even Estonia.
The ensemble is peppered with award-winning films, including Radical Grace produced by Susan Sarandon, Among the Believers directed by Hemal Trivedi and Mohammed Ali Naqvi, A Syrian Love Story directed by Sean McAllister, and A Very German Welcome directed by Carsten Rau and Hauke Wendler.
The festival will also be attended by filmmakers Marcus Vetter (Germany) and Sean McAllister (United Kingdom) as well as all filmmakers who are based in South East Asia. The festival will also feature masterclasses and the inaugural Freedom Talks Series.
