Celebrating the 91st anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore’s visit to Penang in August 1927, Cape Poetics is presenting two magnificent stories over 2 weekends in Sept 2018 (Sept 1-2, Sept 8-9) performed by Himanshu Bhatt at Penang House of Music Black Box, Komtar.
Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913. An alumnus of American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Bhatt enacts as monologues Tagore’s highly entertaining and gripping stories “The River Stairs” and “The Babus of Nayanjore” – both replete with the legendary author’s powerful expression of human emotion and dilemma in literary form!
Dealing with the pressing issue of child marriage, “The River Stairs” depicts a mysterious encounter between a child bride and a monk on the banks of the river Ganges – as told by the river stairs itself.
“The Babus of Nayanjore” is a humorous but poignant account of the last descendant of a fallen once-wealthy landlord clan of old Bengal. This project in English is directed by Jayaram Menon.
