Mister Potato crisps make for an auspicious Yee Sang

It’s the first time I’ve had Mister Potato crisps in my Yee Sang and I like it. It was Yee Sang we assembled at home easily with the ingredients in the Mister Potato X Tai Thong Chinese New Year Yee Sang Box. We just added carrot, radish, pear and pomelo, and slices of lime.

Two varieties of Mr Potato — Spicy Lobster Flavour and Orange Chicken Flavour — are in the Yee Sang Box which also carries 15 packets of dry ingredients together with the spices, oil and Yee Sang sauce.

Here are the ingredients in it: Sauce, pepper, five spice powder, black raisins, dry lime slices, ground peanuts, sunflower seeds, cashew nuts, pickled leek slices, China cucumber slices, pistachios, pumpkin seeds, papaya slices, red ginger slices, pistachios, almond slices, ginger slices and sesame.

We could have added slices of fresh salmon to it as well but we didn’t. The Yee Sang was complete, with lots of crunch, from the nuts and seeds, and fresh ingredients. Of course there was a pleasing crackle and crunch from Mister Potato crisps. The savoury crisps gave a nice balance to the sweet Yee Sang sauce. Altogether it was a hearty and complete Yee Sang.

Every Chinese New Year Mister Potato releases two new Asian-inspired, special edition flavours. For this year it’s Orange Chicken and Spicy Lobster for its “Hari-hari Mau Chic-Ka-Boom campaign”.

The Orange Chicken crisps have a tangy orange aroma and sweetness. The Spicy Lobster ones are tingly with chilli and has a significant lobster flavour. Both have an auspicious ring to it, so appropriate for a Yee Sang Platter.

The Chinese word for mandarin oranges is ‘kam’, which is ‘gold’ and is believed to bring wealth while lobster is supposed to embody strength and fortune, said Pierre Pang, Group Executive Director of MAMEE-Double Decker.

““Both flavour variants are being sold in the usual canister form but for 2022, we have also come up with a unique yee sang box set that we have worked closely with the Tai Thong Group to create,” he added.
