The festive buffet at Curate never ceases to amaze with its variety. We can opt to have an entirely western meal with the Christmas turkey and roast lamb, with all the side dishes, or sit down and still celebrate with Asian dishes.
We negotiate the buffet that begins with salads and appetisers outside, then in the dining room proper, we pick out the choicest prawns, scallops, clams and other seafood. The udang galah (the prawn with the fat head) is my pick, followed by the three types of ceviche – red snapper, seabass and prawn. The snapper and the prawn ceviche are tart and perky, just lovely on thin toast.
We couldn’t pass the cheese table without picking up small chunks of the soft cheeses to enjoy with fruit; we even tasted a rendang cheese!
The Middle Eastern dishes beckon, from hummus, tajine chicken and a Palestinian dish Koosa Hoos of squash stuffed with spiced rice and meat in tomato gravy. On this table too are Fish Kebabs and Lamb Shank Ouzi.
I had some roasted lamb leg, passed the busy roasted turkey station back to our table where some freshly cooked Chinese dishes awaited, from steamed fish to fried noodles, fried chicken and tofu.
Irresistible is the dessert table outside. The Apple Toffee Pudding is as scrumptious as it looks. Then there are mince pies, pumpkin pie, a squishy rose-flavoured dessert that tastes like Turkish delight, poached pears, fruit cake and strawberry pralines, and local kuih of course. Not to be missed are the crunchy Sparrow Nest Pistachios.
